What My First Job Taught Me

Soooo... today was the day!

I quit my first job out of college to pursue my next big opportunity. Being a fresh new graduate, this is kinda sorta a big deal.

If I'm being honest, this job was the perfect one to start off my career. It introduced me to corporate culture while getting the chance to truly work on skills I really wanted to grow.

Here's me, writing about it. I wanted to take the time to reflect on my experience and share what I learned about life as an adult. That's what this blog is for, right?!

Be Open to the Unexpected

The months leading up to graduation, I had no idea what I was going to do and where I was going to end up. A quarter of job applications and nothing. I had a few job interviews here and there, but I had no luck.

Before the end of my last quarter, my supervisor was curious if I had interest in working social media full-time for the Admissions Office. I loved my current job and so I thought, "why not?" I had no idea if I wanted to stay in San Diego and if I actually did want to pursue social media, but I had the chance and took it.

Every opportunity is a learning experience and I can definitely vouch for that. This job allowed me to grow tremendously in a span of one year. Transitioning from a student intern to a full-time employee went smoothly and I felt comfortable taking charge.

If it weren't for this first job, I wouldn't have gotten my next opportunity. It's important to stay open-minded and take advantage of opportunities that come your way. You never know what you'll get out of them!

Stay Curious

On the job, don't be afraid to ask questions! Seriously.

There are so many things you can learn from your coworkers.

Being the youngest one in the office (excluding our interns), I interacted a lot with our older employees.

Not only did I learn more about the industry, I got to learn more about life. My coworkers always gave me advice on my career and finding a work-life balance.

Take Initiative

If you see a co-worker needing some help, lend a hand. Have an idea you think will help your project thrive? Go for it. Be a go-getter because you will definitely be noticed!

Be Mindful of Your Attitude

No matter what you end up doing for your first job, make sure to stay positive and enthusiastic. Make the best out of your first experience. Whether your first job aligns with what you hope to do pursue, stay optimistic and see what skills you can learn and transfer to your next opportunity. Your hard work will pay off!

Life Kinda Just Hits You

Life has been such a rollercoaster since graduating and starting my first job. Shit just happens, but you gotta roll with the punches. I've had so many emotions while taking on my role, but I don't regret anything. Remember not to be too hard on yourself and know that your wellness matters.

Well, I'm onto bigger and better things. I'll keep you all updated soon!

Cheers to me learning more and more about how to adult!

Sincerely,
