It’s been a week since I left New York and I’m still sad about it. The past week was spent reflecting on my latest trip to New York City. It was honestly one for the books and I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.
Back in March, I applied for this conference called the “MarketingEDGE Collegiate Summit” while procrastinating on studying for my final exams. To be honest, I was so inspired by a good friend of mine who was always out going to these things (Shout out to my big, Joey!). I have never been to a Marketing conference before so I guess why not, right?? I took the shot and applied. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything. Surely after my spring break trip to New York, I received an email with the subject “Marketing EDGE Collegiate Summit Status Update.” I had a feeling I wasn’t going to get it. Little did I know, I was chosen along 79 other students across the nation.
Coming into it, I didn’t think much of it until the two weeks leading up to my flight. This was going to be my first time flying alone outside of California. I was a little anxious! Honestly, I was super scared that the other students would be so intimidating and intense. I really hoped I wouldn’t get an awkward roommate who just never wanted to talk to me. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I mean, I was flying all the way to the East Coast and I didn’t even know if this was legit. I couldn’t just run back home because this was a six-hour flight away! However, I went with my gut feeling and it told me to go with it. I’m glad I did.
I don’t know why, but something about New York leaves me refreshed every time. My first trip, I felt like I found myself again. Not to be super dramatic about it, but it’s true. Exploring the city just made me feel like I belonged there. Everything was new to me, but it felt so familiar. Coming my second time, I feel like I was able to find my dreams again.
New York is the hub for all things media. Whether digital or print, it’s the perfect place to be when pursuing these professions. Being able to be in New York, learning all about marketing from industry professionals was such an amazing opportunity. I had the chance to learn all about emerging trends in technology, such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and cryptocurrency, and how they can transform the marketing industry. I was able to listen to so many inspiring marketing superstars who have followed their own path to success. It’s humbling to see how supportive they are about the next generation of marketers and giving back to the community. I was able to meet someone from LinkedIn, L’Oreal, Pepsico, NASDAQ, and Facebook. I learned so much about networking within such a short amount of time. After this week, I went out and got some business cards designed and printed because of that.
Although I was able to learn so many cool things, the best thing I got out of this experience is all the new friends I made. Coming from all across the country, I loved getting to know so many diverse people and their experiences. My roommate Isioma turned out to be so awesome. We immediately clicked and I’m so excited to see all the dope things she’ll be doing! Coming out of this trip, I can say I now have people I want to visit in every single state. I have friends who are supporting me from miles and miles away and I will forever be grateful. Everyone is so hardworking and talented. I can’t wait to see all of us grow into Marketing Superstars!!!
Thank you MarketingEDGE for helping me find my edge.
